Currently, excavated textured walls are fashionable for interior walls. In case you have bought a new house that has textured walls and you want to change it, what can you do? To have smooth walls, we are going to look at four ways you can change the interior walls.

Four ways to change from textured walls to smooth walls

For most of us, the smoothest walls are the best. The methods we are going to look at are also great solutions for other types of distressed walls like old-wallpaper or exposed plaster walls.

Place New Drywall After Removing The Textured Drywall

If your house has heavy textured walls like the stucco look, then this is the best choice to use as a replacement. As you install this new drywall, note that you are also skim-coating to get a smooth surface by covering the seams.

Use other materials like wood to cover the walls

One of the popular wall options is wood paneling. Beautiful wood pieces are being used by flooring companies to cover wall surfaces. Additionally, corrugated metal is also being installed over drywall to bring out a cool look if you desire to have an industrial ambiance. But as you plan to add a new surface, you also have to address baseboard issues, in case there are any. In most cases, the new layer will go beyond the baseboard profile, and the net result will not look good.

To come up with a solution, you can decide to remove the baseboards and place the panels all the way to the floor. You can use a Fry Reglet metal to hold the bottom part of the paneling a few millimeters from the floor so that it looks as though it is floating. Another alternative is to remove the baseboard, place some stock wood, and re-install the baseboards in such a way that it flushes with the new panels.

Apply a skim coat

During the installation of drywall, the seams and fasteners are skim coated using a thin coat of mud or a joint compound to level the surface before papering or painting. This is the same technique that is used when removing textured walls. A thin layer of mud coat is added on the wall and sanded after the mud is dry to reveal a sanded smooth surface.

If you have bumpy walls, you will need more than one layer of mud. It is tough to skim coat an entire room. A better job can be done by professionals to prevent any sanding from getting to other areas of your home.

Make some room adjustments

Add some interesting artwork to change the look of your ugly texture. You can also decide to change the location of the lighting by placing them away from the walls and placing low lighting in the room. Finally, you can place flat paint, or glossy paint to highlight the wall’s texture. If you go the extra mile and add some classic furniture in the room, then it is easy to draw attention away from the walls.
